The other day I told my friend, “Hey I have met this one celebrity 3 days back.”

His response was, “Oh him! In fact, I met the same celebrity when I was a kid. In fact, I used to get to see him on a regular basis.”

He then went on and on about it.

I and tuned myself off from the conversation.

Why?

What happened here?

Instead of participating in my excitement, my friend refused to address it or celebrate it.

Instead, he used the opportunity to speak about his own experience.

This tendency is so strong in so many people. It prevents us from creating deep relationships.

I wish my friend would have shown curiosity in understanding my story. I wish he would have asked me more questions about my experience.

Listening, not talking, creates deep relationships.
